Alternate contraction and relaxation in different parts of alimentary canal is called peristalsis. Food moves ahead through alimentary canal because of peristalsis.

Peristalsis is characterized by alternate contraction and relaxation, which pushes ingested food through the digestive tract towards its release at the anus.
