Bamboo Curry

Summary

This is a Santhali Folk Tale. A santhali bridegroom visits his in-law’s place. His mother-in-lad makes a dish of bamboo for him. When the bridegroom asks about the ingredient, the mother-in-law points towards the bamboo door.

यह एक संथाली लोककथा है। एक संथाली दूल्हा एक बार अपनी ससुराल गया। उसकी सास ने उसके लिए बाँस से बना एक पकवान बनाया। जब दूल्हे ने उस पकवान की सामग्री के बारे में पूछा तो सास ने बाँस से बने एक दरवाजे की ओर इशारा किया।

When returning to his home, the bridegroom carries the bamboo door with him. He asks his wife to make bamboo curry. After many rounds of boiling, the bamboo is not cooked. It is so hard that one cannot eat it. They are confused.

जब दूल्हा अपने घर वापस जा रहा था तो साथ में बाँस का दरवाजा भी ले गया। उसने अपनी पत्नी से बाँस की करी बनाने को कहा। कई बार उबालने और घंटों पकाने के बाद भी बाँस पका नहीं। वह अभी भी इतना कठोर था कि उसे खाया नहीं जा सकता था। उनकी समझ में कुछ नहीं आ रहा था।

The in-laws come visiting that evening. When the mother-in-law comes to know about the bamboo door, she laughs. She says that the curry was made of bamboo shoots, and not of bamboo door.

उसी शाम दूल्हे के सास ससुर उससे मिलने आए। जब सास को बाँस के दरवाजे के बारे में पता चला तो वह हँसने लगी। उसने कहा कि उस करी को बाँस के कोमल तने से बनाया गया था ना की बाँस के गेट से।
