Metals and Non-metals

Substances can be classified into two broad categories, viz. metals and non-metals. Metals are hard and shiny and are good conductors of electricity and heat. Most of the metals are ductile and malleable; which means they can be beaten into thin sheets and pulled into wires. Non-metals are brittle and dull and are bad conductors of electricity and heat. Most of the metals are present in solid state at room temperature, while non-metals are found in all the three states. Some metals are highly reactive and some are moderately reactive and hence these metals are not found in free-state in nature. However, noble metals; like gold, silver and platinum; are the least reactive and hence they are found in free-state in nature. Some metals; like iron and copper; get oxidized in the presence of humidity and air, which leads to their corrosion.
