Acid Base and Salt

A substance which tastes sour is called acid. An acid turns blue litmus paper to red. A substance which tastes bitter and feels soapy on touch is called base. A base turns red litmus paper to blue. A base which is soluble in water is called an alkali and such a solution is called alkaline solution. Acids which are obtained from plants or animals are called organic acids. Acids which are prepared by minerals are called mineral acids or inorganic acids. Organic acids are weak acids, while inorganic acids are strong acids. Both acids and bases are highly corrosive in nature and hence should be handled with care. A reaction between an acid and a base produces salt and is called neutralization reaction. Acids, bases and salts are very useful in our day to day life.
