Carbon and Its Compoound

Carbon is a unique element because it can form thousands of compounds. Carbon shows tetravalency which enables it to form thousands of compounds by various permutations and combinations. Initially, compounds of carbon were obtained from living organisms and hence carbon’s compounds are also called organic compounds. Hydrocarbons are compounds which are mainly composed of carbon and hydrogen. Hydrocarbons can be broadly classified into two categories, viz. saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons. Only single bonds are present in saturated hydrocarbons, while unsaturated hydrocarbons have one double or triple bond; apart from single bonds. Based on the type of functional groups; organic compounds can be classified into various types, like alcohol, aldehyde, carboxylic acid and ketone.
